A short guide to art for your wall
A few simple rules that help a work feel at home on your wall.
Size
Above a sofa, bed or sideboard, choose a work, including its frame, about two thirds of the furniture's width. On an empty wall, a work that covers about 60 to 75 percent of the wall's width feels balanced.
Height
Hang the work so its centre sits about 145 to 150 cm from the floor. Above furniture, leave 15 to 25 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
Groupings
Treat a group of works as one piece. Keep 5 to 8 cm between frames, and try the layout on the floor or with paper templates on the wall before you drill.
Framing
A mount gives the work room to breathe and suits small works, drawings and prints. Oak feels light and natural, walnut adds warmth, and black is graphic and sharp.
Light
Keep works on paper and photographs out of direct sunlight, and prefer warm, soft lighting in the evening.
